Seismic Shifts for percussion trio
The inspiration for this piece comes from the Oklahoma Earthquake Swarms. My goal was to portray the concept of seismic activity through the vibrations of drumming. Each movement is individually titled and I capture the essence of each movement via percussive techniques used on instruments, implements, and the instrument choices themselves. For example, in Tremors I utilize various drum rolls i.e. open and closed. In Waves I use crotales and prayer bowls to allow the resonant metals to interact via their sustained sounds or wavelengths. Finally, in Quakes I chose to mixed meter and vigorous drumming to represent an earthquake that is very clearly felt.
This piece was commissioned by the University of Oklahoma Percussion Consortium
