'Grit' for solo timpani

Grit was written for William Shaltis, who is Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Memphis and Principal Timpanist of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. Inspired by one of Bill's solo timpani performances at the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy, I decided to compose a piece for him. I wanted to tie in the city of Memphis in some way, so I titled the work "Grit" after the Grit and Grind Memphis Grizzlies.

*Also requires the use of four single crotale pitches to be placed on the drums.
